Afghan National Treasures Conference

July 2003 -

Unesco met this month in Paris to discuss the restoration of damaged national treasures in Afghanistan. One of the items the International Co-ordination Committee, which is comprised of forty experts, discussed was repairing the caves of Bamiyan.

On the evening preceding the three-day conference the Afghan filmmaker Siddiq Barmak received the ‘Fellini Silver Medal’ from Koïchiro Matsuura, the head of Unesco. He was awarded the medal for his film ‘Osama’, a film honouring Afghan women. This was the first Afghan film to be presented at the Cannes film festival.

Barmak is also the head of the Afghan Children’s Education Movement (ACEM), an organisation that strongly promotes literacy, art and culture among Afghan children.
