The Power of Culture

Many films that are currently being made in Latin America deal with bored adolescents who do not know what to do with their lives. The sixth edition of LAFF tries to discover why.

The South African Ministry of Culture launched a contest for the design of a memorial centre focusing on Sarah - Saartjie - Bartmann and her people, the Khoi San in March 2009.

Slavery, revolution and isolation are the themes at the big Cuba exhibition in the Groninger Museum. The exhibition covers the period 1868 to the present day, but it focuses mainly on the years after Fidel Castro's assumption of power.

'Más creación, más cultura' was one of the intended government objectives as stated by Chile's President Michelle Bachelet when she was elected in 2006.  Now that slogan has been turned into real policy.

The Museo del Caribe was opened in Barranquilla, Colombia, at the end of April 2009. Modern media are used to visualize the unique mixed culture of the Caribbean.

For centuries, Tanzania's coast was East Africa's most powerful trade centre. Ruins on Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara are now silent witnesses of the coast's golden age. These sites are now endangered and have therefore been included on the Unesco List of World Heritage in Danger. The Netherlands Centre for International Hertiage Activities has been asked to assist in mapping and protecting the sites that are located underwater.

Over the last years the walled town of Galle in southwest Sri Lanka has worked continuously work on restoring the unique heritage. The special aspect about this project was the large involvement of the local population.
