The Power of Culture

A campaign to constitute a global initiative for promoting and strengthening African arts and reasoning.

Local radio stations in Latin America play a stimulating part in Indian emancipation processes. ALER, the Latin American Association for Radio Education in Quito, uses a network of correspondents and local radio stations to compile cultural radio programmes that are transmitted by satellite to some one hundred radio stations throughout Latin America.

With his non-governmental organisation Aina photographer Reza Deghati wants to contribute to cultural reconstruction in former and current conflict areas, such as Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. His activities include training journalists and establishing magazines.

In April 2007, in Yunnan, South China, the third Yunfest was held: an international documentary festival that provides a platform for the growing documentary world.

Travels, Transit is the theme of the fourth edition of Amakula Kampala International Film Festival, which runs at Uganda National Theatre and in thirty video halls around Kampala May 3-13, 2007

Those who believe that the Indians in Latin America still believe that a photo will steal their soul or flee to escape video cameras are wrong. Since the first anthropological and artistic experiments in the 1970s and 1980s, this continent has developed its own film and video production sector.

Culture for Development is one of the new portals on the KIT website. This English portal gives access to a wide variety of documents, newsletters, electronic magazines, discussion groups and other internet sources in the area of culture in or related to developing countries.

This month the Power of Culture celebrates its tenth birthday. Based on the conviction that culture is anything but peripheral, the website has been contributing to the international debate on culture and development for ten years.

The idea of letting African youth write their own film scripts to provide information about AIDS was born in 1997. Since then, 105,000 young Africans from 37 countries have participated in scenario contests.
