March 2007 -

The Power of Culture published a summary in 2004 describing the primary policy activities of European donor countries in the area of culture and development. Because much has changed in scarcely three years, the articles have now been updated. Two new countries have also been added: Denmark and Austria.

Belize

February 2007 -

The Latin American country along the bay of Honduras – the Maya name of which means “muddy water” – has a relatively well organised cultural policy that is institutionalised in the National Institute for Culture and History (NICH) in Belmopau.

Conference on art and culture in development cooperation

February 2007 -

The Austrian organisation Kulturen in Bewegung organised the conference European Network: Culture and Development in cooperation with the German CulturCooperation. The conference took place from 25 to 27 January in Vienna.

Argentina

January 2007 -

Like in many Latin American countries, culture proved to be an excellent remedy for the traumas of the military dictatorship that oppressed collective memory and the freedom of expression for years in Argentina. Today the cultural policy balances between contributing to social development and promoting cultural industries.

December 2006 -

The government of El Salvador believes that culture is important. Even a national responsibility, because "the growth and the self confidence of a nation are so valuable", according to the country's cultural policy.

Goethe-Institut and GTZ study links between culture and development

December 2006 -

"Investing in culture is the most sustainable type of development cooperation," said a participant at the Culture and Development conference Putting Theory into Practice held in Berlin in November 2006. It marked the conclusion of a project in which the overlap between culture and development was studied.

Alternative Nobel Prize for international poetry festival Medellin

December 2006 -

The Right Livelihood Awards will be presented in the Swedish parliament on 8 December 2006, on the eve of the official presentation of the Nobel Prizes. One of the striking winners this year is the Festival Internacional de Poesia de Medellin (Colombia).

Mexico

November 2006 -

Mexico hosted the Unesco conference in 1982 that gave birth to international recognition for the importance of cultural policy. The country itself is primarily striving to stop the cultural influence from its neighbour to the north.
